b.1986 Hobart, Tasmania —Taj Alexander has lived and worked in Melbourne, Victoria for the past twenty years. He now lives and works in Bream Creek on the East coast of Tasmania, Australia.
Swoop & Melodie draws together the creative work of painter and designer Taj Alexander. The projects exhibited under Swoop & Melodie aim to emphasise the correlation between traditionally distinct creative disciplines. The concept is to demonstrate, through the presentation and exploration of painting, design and music, how each practice, with its own recognisable methods, supports and informs the development of ideas and solutions. Building on this philosophy, Swoop & Melodie strives to develop strong connections with its clients and collaborators to further explore how this cross-pollination of processes can be used to achieve innovative and enlightening creative solutions.

When establishing the design requirements of the client, it is important that a personal and/or business philosophy is considered, as it will provide the foundation for the growth of their concept. In a rapidly evolving market, it is our responsibility as innovators to respond with sensitivity and consideration, in order to ensure the clients needs are met and are in harmony with their environment. Painter and designer Taj ‘Deams’ Alexander was born 1986 in Hobart, Tasmania. He now lives and works in Melbourne, Victoria. Although his creative practice is broad, his current focus and specialisation is painting, sculpture and large-scale mural work. His intuitive approach to abstraction draws from over fifteen years of experimentation and development in non-objective painting. This refinement in process allows for an introspective exploration of both visual language and relationship to environment. The overarching themes in Taj’s work all connect to the nature of the human experience or ‘human condition’ with an emphasis on the exploration of philosophy, consciousness and perception.
Taj’s understanding and investigation of materiality in the field of painting is extensive and playfully unconventional. While deeply influenced by classical movements such as minimalism, abstract impressionism and Optical Art, he maintains an open and progressive approach to image making. This approach sees influences from a multitude of creative fields including digital art, analogue photography, architecture and music.
Through his emotionally charged visual language Taj’s work seeks to both seduce and confound the viewer whilst maintaining a deep sense of awareness and value. At the centre of each body (of work) is a poetic yet broadly accessible concept that connects the work to either a philosophical, social or psychological inquiry or concern.
